Sheppard Piling was fortunate to win the piling contract for Merit Holdings to build John Gosnell & Co’s new purpose- built manufacturing facility which is the first since the organisations establishment in 340 years. The new facility is of significant importance to both the UK’s oldest cosmetic manufacturer, Gosnells, and to the local people of Lewes, as it forms part of a major £180m regeneration project in the area. The relocation to Mailing Brooks Industrial Estate means that Gosnells can expand and deliver better job prospects for residents in and around Lewes. The new facility includes a warehouse, storage, offices, cleanrooms and laboratory areas as well as a biodiverse Sedum grass roof. Merits portfolio extends across the UK and Sheppard Piling had previously worked on the GSK project at Ware and they were looking to work with us again. Merits are very keen to work closer with their qualified supply chain and in the case of Gosnells, the communication with the contract and project manager began early in the life of the project. The team identified that the soil conditions were changeable with soft alluvium and going into Lewes modular chalk at between 11 and 12 metres. We suggested CFA piling where the concrete is pumped under pressure and the drilling is sympathetic in these types of ground conditions. The programme was scheduled for 4 weeks where 340 x 13-meter piles were installed. The team at Sheppard’s embraced the idea of working closely with Merits as we worked on the difficult aspects of the job together to solve any issues at an early stage. We also asked the client if we could deploy a drone to take aerial shots of our rigs working on the site of which the client duly obliged. The show reel video can be seen at www.sheppardpiling.com. The Gosnells site is in close proximity to a residential area, so a community representative was appointed to communicate with the local residence so that they felt part of the project. We will be exhibiting at London Build 2017, stand C84 and look forward to welcoming all visitors onto our stand to view our past and present piling projects.
